Re: Best Agency based on PRICE only

We're always willing to try new agencies when we find a cruise to book. How do we reach you when we are ready to cruise next time? I believe you are allowed to post your agency name here. (We prefer to do everything except payment via email because it is so much faster and we can do it while continuing to work. If an agency responds that we have to call to give them further information before they can give us a quote we move on -- that's simply a way to get you on the phone and pressure you into booking right then.)

I've been very happy with Bestpricecruises. My agent there, Robert Clark, is very responsive to all inquiries, & their OBC, at least with Celebrity, my line of choice is a tick better than say, Costco.

Re: Best Agency based on PRICE only

Everyone selling cruises should have the same price unless they are giving part of their commission to you or they have a group booking available as someone stated. Almost all cruise lines have no compete type policies. Meaning everyone gets the same price for everything. If your saving $1000 it is probably because a person or website pulled the fare improperly.

The onboard credit of $400 on a cheaper cruise has to be something the lines have available to anyone. Honestly on a cheaper cruise there is only $30-100 in commission so there isn't likely anyone out there willing to take a huge loss just to earn your business on one cruise.

There are also anti-rebating policies many lines are adopting preventing T/A's from advertising rebates other than logo items and wine. Many also are restricting the unadvertised rebating to 5% of the base price. Which would be minus Non-commissionable fee's and port fee's and government taxes. I am not sure what punishment will be for those caught advertising what is not allowed so many agents like myself don't advertise but if you call then a rebate can be offered. Rebates from what I understand can only be offered over the phone, by email or to your own mailing list.

Re: Best Agency based on PRICE only

Maybe another thing to understand that may or may not help when you are going after rebates is what makes the difference between what one T/A can offer and the next.

As we already said everyone is able to sell for the same price. What is different is the amount of commission an agency receives. There are 5 or more levels. You receive the lowest level if you sell 1 cruise. And maybe 50 rooms to get to the second level. If I remember correctly Carnival just changed their policy so you have to sell 1000 Carnival cruises to get the top commission. That may be person sailed but hopefully you can see that is something very difficult for a mom and pop agency to acheive.

Many home based consultants/agents like myself will never be able to reach that goal by themselves so in order to make life easy and get a little extra commission we work under a Host agency. The Host pools everyones sales together in order to meet these higher levels. Unfortunately this isn't free for us so we split commissions three ways. Ourselves, Our host and our customers.

Do you pay sticker price when you purchase a new car? Did you shop the last time you purchased a new applience? Yes, many cruise agents need to be protected because they do not know how to operate a business. In many "free" countries they might call the cruise line policies communist. Everything that was stated in this posting is 100% correct, but not democratic. Carnival does have a new policy and over 25% direct bookings. Guess what Carnival gave 90% of the agencies for a Christmas present... 25% to 30% lower commission for next year. (That is 1-3% of 10-16%). This is a multi-step plan... First "Level the playing field" and they have almost done that. Next slowly reduce the commission paid and finally take away your business away via direct bookings. YES, THIS IS A GREAT THING FOR AGENTS.... No one for the cruiselines to compete with.

Jerry, Travel agents don't buy cruises and resell them like a store buys appliances marking them up as much as 50%. Do you think we stock our shelves with cruises? We are an (agent)and our job is to protect you and work to get you the best vaction for your money. That is our profession, and yes, we get paid by the cruise lines for our work. By the way, Your attitude sucks! If I find that you are calling my agency with that attitude, We will not work with you. My clients are happy and willing to pay a little more for great service. I am not saying that I charge brochure rates, no one does. What I am saying is that I will take time, or I will pay my agents to take the time to find my client the best value for their precious vacation cruise. We take the worry and hastle of planning what is almost always our clients one vacation a year that they look forward to. That is a value that we earn money for doing. Yes, there are some people that will spend 20 hours of their time working T/A's against each other hoping to find desperate ones working from home that will give away their commissions. My clients spend their time wisely and plan things like their excursions, or calling other family members to discuss their upcoming vacation they are looking forward to. They appreciate us, and we appreciate them.

    Sincerely, Kevin

Kevin, I just looked at your website. If I had booked my November RCCL cruise with you I would have paid a couple hundred PER PERSON too much! Now go ahead and tell me how much better your service is than my T/A (who btw is excellent) but willing to offer OBC.

    I'm just saying!!!!

Re: Best Agency based on PRICE only

No one is telling anyone how to spend their commissions. If you use an online service such as cruise compete, everything is equal. The agent or agency decides what they can afford to offer and still make a decent living. And if you read the boards and learn which agencies are willing to work with you on pricing you can always save money. Save a little each cruise and that's another cruise you can take!

If you don't want the business of those who feel a little OBC is fair then "just say no." But don't say your service is better -- any of us can book directly with the cruise lines for brochure rates.
