    Laura Sterling- Cruise Critic

Just curios as to if anybody else finds the wonderful moderator on Cruise Critic more trouble than she is worth. Reason for my concern is the apparent racism of that outfit against English people. I was a contributor on Cruise Critic for over 2 years until somebody disagreed with a comment I had made. The problem was that they could not understand Northern England humour and treated my comments as an insult rather than Lancashire humour. I was then banned from the community boards and Cruise Critic  (Laura Sterling) refuse to even advise the specific reasons for the ban. Numerous attempts to ask Cruise Critic for an explanation are now ignored as the lady in charge appears to control everything.

This kind of attitude would not be allowed to happen in England, and I consider it a disgrace that one person is allowed to dictate when there must be a board of directors. However the situation remains unchanged and I would be grateful for any comments on this situation from any other cruisers who have had issues with this company/woman

    Re: Laura Sterling- Cruise Critic

There has been a long history of this kind of stuff over at cc. There was a man who took many cruises on NCL and answered a lot of questions on the board. He had thousands of posts and was well respected. Then one day he was banned for some  reason. Those of us, including me, who came to his defense and questioned this were also banned.

The quality of that web site has gone down over the years with insults and more arguing being posted than I care to remember.

I recently got a spam message from them that they were one million members strong and thanked me for that. If they counted me, who was banned, as well as the others who were banned, how accurate is that?

You are just one of the many who were treated like dirt. I suggest cruising the many other cruise message boards that are out there.

Hello there folks at cruise fish.net:

I would appreciate your reviewing and subsequently removing the posting at this
    link:http://www.cruisefish.net/forum/thread.md?id_thread=5350
It is slanderous, and also full of untruths.

Thank you very much, and please let me know,

Thanks Lotteryfan for your input. Looks like that I am not the only person to find the personnel at Cruise Critic a little above their staion. Interesting now also to receive a reply from "Titus" (I wonder who that is), again trying to dictate and interfere with other cruise forums and wishing to take control by requesting a post to be removed. Which cruise forum does that remind you of?

Titus runs cruisefish and he was clearly trying to show you that Laura contacted him to remove your thread from here but he has not.

Thankyou Catherine for your response. It is pleasing to see that Cruisefish can look after their own posts without trying to be dictated to by Laura Sterling. It is also rather amusing  to read that as a "senior manager", she does not know the difference between slander and libel. Wonderful !!

    Re: Laura Sterling- Cruise Critic

Actually what I find funny is the fact that she cannot have posts or threads removed from here. I have seen the mods over at cc remove so many posts and threads for no reason. I have also had problems with them not responding to email questions about such bans and the one time they answered it was rude.

Kinda glad to see her get a taste of her own medicine especially with the fact that you cannot mention cruisefish on CC without having the post removed.

    Good job Titus!

Don't forget there is also reddit, https://www.reddit.com/r/cruise

It's not super active yet, but it'll be where the next generation of cruisers ends up; the people who aren't into the old-school autocratic control-freak moderation style. The thing that drives me insane about CC is the completely arbitrary nature of their censorship. (Pretty sure reddit.com will be filtered there, for example). I had a thread about dolphin welfare summarily removed, and it hadn't even gotten ugly or anything.

And of course cruise critic's desperation to keep people from discussing travel agencies or any site that may make money off the cruise industry that isn't *them*, such as costco.

Meanwhile, longtime trolls are allowed to just do their thing, and people are permitted to endlessly derail threads. As long as they don't mention travel agent names or anything controversial, like animal welfare.

Drives me batty, but for now it's got the most activity. That won't be true forever.

I have had my hand slapped on there numerous times for discussing facebook, travel agents and rude cruise critic moderators. If you really want to go back on there make up a new cc name and email and post away.

Nancy, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, my IP address on my lap top has been blocked to even read any posts on Cruise Critic forums. I have since joined Cruiseline which is a lot more friendly cruise forum. There are no nasty posters or moderators who think that they are so wonderful. I have spoken to a number of people in the travel industry including HolidayTravel Watch and they are fully aware of the shortcomings of Cruise Critic particularly the Community Manager and are monitoring the company carefully. I have decided that the outfit is not worth my while to bother about any more and no doubt in due course other cruisers will follow suit

I went and checked out cruiseline, but unfortuantely the site doesn't seem very active. I went into the obligatory smoking thread and people are being just as nasty to each other (if not more so) than on CC.

The problem is that forums do need moderation, especially if people are going to turn into sociopaths online (which they tend to do). :) It's just that many sites (such as CC) have extremely inconsitent/arbitrary moderators. Highly active forums need to make a basic, POSTED set of rules and then stick to them. Such as: keep threads on topic, no personal attacks, maybe a separate section for when threads go political/religious. For example, I started a thread about dolphin welfare on CC and it was locked within hours. I don't know why. I can see them saying 'it's controversial', but they allow smoking and dress code fights to go on forever and get very ugly.

People are awful to each other on CC because they have seen that they can get away with it. There seem to be different mods for different forums, and they choose arbitrary times to lock various 'problem' threads. They often delete or lock threads with no explanation, which means people are not receiving any cues about how they should behave. There is also a rule that you're not allowed to ask why a thread was locked, which is just childish. Figure out a set of rules, enforce them. Civilized conversation IS possible.

    Hi
Glad to see I am not alone
I was banned a couple of years ago for initially trying to be humourous and then I had the audacity to question the impartiality of the Cruise Critic site since it had been sold to Amazon/Trip Advisor.

That was the end of my posting on CC then, they even blocked my ip too.

    Anyway no great loss

Thanks Paul for your contribution. My IP address was also blocked but having had a sneaky look at recent posts from another scource, it seems that the same crew of uninitiated people are still posting silly coments. Trying to be humerous does not work with Laura Sterling. She is a law unto herself. Unfortunately nobody at Cruisecritic wants to say anything against her or take any action for her meddling and rudeness. You mention Trip advisor and I find it so ironical that on there I am a senior level 5 contributor. You cannot believe that they are basically the same company.

For those who have been blocked from cruise critic. Can't you make up a new handle and then go on cruise critic from your i phone instead of your computer.  If you go through your cell phone carriers network they can't track your new handle name to your home computer.

Nancy, thanks for your help but not everybody has an i phone. I have a Nokia that sends texts and makes an occasional call.
