Re: Best Agency based on PRICE only

Two things. I used Cruise Compete and liked it but it found my agent "mike" at cruisevacationoutlet. I also get a quote from Mike and 75% of the time he's come up with best OBC. On our $1389 (incl taxes) 11 day RCI cruise he got us $325 OBC, vs Crucon (next highest at $150) and no change or cancel fee. We consider OBCs cash to reduce our cost because you can cash in at 3% fee on RCI.

Second, I just learned that Crucon now charges $100 PP fee if you cancel or change date once you make deposit. They sure lost my business.

I use TheCruiseXperts.com. They have the best customer service and prices of anyone! It is as simple as that.

Re: Best Agency based on PRICE only

Unfortunately, not a one of the four local agencies I contacted would give me a discount on a Princess cruise I was interested in. No OBCs either. So I went on line, as I have been doing for years. I saved my neighbors $1000 by pointing out that Cunard had dropped its price on their cruise. They went to their local agent who adjusted the fare. I do better for my friends than I can do for myself locally. :frown: I would love to support all local merchants, but they've got to do their share.

as an agent,it is the service i provide, not so much the price.i would love to find the cheapest bundle a all times, but from experience, it is not always the best. i can offer knowledge and experience, and an advocate if something fails.

Re: Best Agency based on PRICE only

Best price vs great service has always been since the beginning of time the equation. If you are bullheaded and want to brag about the fact that you got a better price than anyone else, then you are going to get little or no service. And when you get lousy service, you are not going to tell anyone because you want to look smart. Let me tell you, we all know who you are. Travel agents will look for the best value by finding the fare codes or promotions that offer the biggest bang for the buck. That research takes time, and time is money. Any one who has common sense knows that you can't get something for nothing and that you get what you pay for. If you get lucky and find a lazy travel agent who will give you their commision in order to get you the on board credit that you are looking for, then guess what? You hired a lazy agent who does not have enough self respect to put any value on their service, or the time they spend doing their job. I hire people who do a great job, who I trust whole heartedly, and who I respect. I am willing to pay a fair price because i understand that you get what you pay for. I inform my friends and business associates of those companies that I find who offfer that kind of great service, because we appreciate good old fashioned value. I look down on anyone who expects people to work for free, and I value others like me who are willing to pay a fair price for great service.

Re: Best Agency based on PRICE only

The idea that lowest price = poor service in today's cruse pricing market is simply crazy and a way for high-priced TA's who are not willing to negotiate their rates to justify that practice. With web sites like cruise compete, email blasts from agencies who have access to lower prices by holding large blocks of group space, lower pricef inventory and google it is a shame if any customer cruises at brochure rates. On an Alaska cruise a couple years back a TA gave us back $400 per cabin in OBC. That's money that would have been left on the table had we not used Cruise Compete. That TA has become our go-to guy for cruise prices and will always give us OBC even on the lowest priced 7 night cruise using senior rates, residence rates, etc. to get the price to an average of about $350/person/week. That doesn't mean I don't check prices with vacations to go, or other large cruise agencies -- you never know where you find a bargain. Just don't fall for the high price = better service crap if you like to cruise and want to go more often, It's crazy talk!

Re: Best Agency based on PRICE only

-----But for those of us who only want to cruise, who don't want to spend time at either end, who are capable of making our own reservations, etc., etc, we really only want the cheapest cabin in the category we've chosen. My neighbor uses an agent who charges him full price for everything, He sticks with her, he claims, because once when he was in her office, she picked up the phone and was on a first name basis with whomever she was talking to. That impressed him. Yet, it was I, not she, who saved him and his wife $1000 on the Cunard fare And I'm not a travel agent, much less a full service agent.

i am a travel agent, and do not charge an upfront fee. i get paid by the tour operator, cruise line, etc. and not the client. i also offer an opportunity to receive cash back on their travel.

I totally agree with what you have said here. We almost always put our cruises out for bidding on Cruisecompete. We have found that cruisesNmore almost always offers the best overall price (taking in to consideration the OBC)--unless another agency has a group booking. We have found that often agencies responding to the request for a bid from Cruisecompete, do not bid what we are actually asking for. CruisesNmore bids what we are requesting. We have used BestPrice cruises--once and they were fine. We used Cruisequick several times quite a long time ago, but they no longer seem to offer the best deal for what we are looking for. I was happy with Cruisequick when we used them because I like doing things via email and they always responded in a timely fashion.

All that being said--it is definitely easier to book directly with the cruise line and for super cheap last minute cruises we have done that. I am not willing to give up that 10 percent or more discount for that ease.

One more thing--we often book onboard Celebrity and then transfer to the agency. This has to be done within 60 days of booking. I put it in my quote request and even though their fine print says "new bookings only" we are still able to take advantage of the good deal. I think they are talking about transferring old bookings when it says that.
