Holland America will not reduce my rate

I thought Cruisefish sounded like a great tool for getting a rate reduction after booking. Maybe I misunderstood...maybe this is a tool for people still shopping for a cruise. Crusiefish tipped me off that the rate for the stateroom I already booked on Holland America dropped $150/person. I called Holland America and asked if I could get a rate reduction. They said it doesn't work that way. No reduction for a cruise already booked. How does it work with other lines? Interestingly, it sounded like they were going to consider a reduction when they misidentified me as a travel agent. Once they understood I was a passenger, that conversation ended.

If you are outside of the final payment date, and no cancellation fees, cancel and re-book at the lower rate.

If you are in the situation where you could book another line, I would just cancel.

Most lines give the reduction before final payment date 70 - 90 days before sailing knowing that you can cancel and re-book. Once after the final payment date, there is no incentive for the line to give the lower rate. Carnival has I believe an early early saver rate (of many) and only this one will permit a credit if the cabin rate is reduced.

This brings out the old question, is it better to book early or the last minute.

Cruisefish is a great tool and one of a kind.

The cancellation fees are what pin me down. $350/person. So a $150/person rate reduction does me no good. Live and learn. I'll be smarter about booking my next cruise.

Maybe you could transfer your booking to a competent travel agent and let her/him go bat for you to extract the price drop from the cruise line.

Is that even an option?? You suggest it, so I suppose it is. I'll look around for an agent.

    Just a thought, I'm not a specialist.

Can a travel agent comment on whether that strategy is worthwhile?

If true, then this would be a great advertisement for using an agent.

Your suggestion was spot-on, Titus. Because my reservation was within a certain window of time, I was able to have Holland America transfer my reservation to a travel agent. My travel agent then immediately got me the $150/person price reduction.

And, wow, just hours after I got the rate reduction, HAL ups the rate again. Okay, now I have to say, I would never have caught that rate drop without Cruisefish!
