    text message price alerts?

I wish there was a text message option for price drops. I don't check email on my phone, yes I am the last dinosaur who does not have a smartphone. I can check email pretty often but if it could just go to my cell phone I would always be alerted immediately.

This is a good suggestion, but there are some practical problems:

    • sending SMS text messages in bulk is expensive: each mobile operator charges for access to its network

    • the SMS 160 character limit is too low to relay the full information of a (sometimes multiple) price change

So your best bet for now might be to get a smartphone, they are cheap these days and wonderful.

    Re: text message price alerts?

It's more the price of the data package that I'm getting cheap about. Plus I really really love my little samsung phone that flips both ways & has a qwerty kboard with REAL buttons that push down.
I was sure I saw a price drop 8/30 for my Inspiration cruise - saw it on travelocity & then was sure I saw it in the price history on this site. Carnival denied it - said they could not verify the price for the sailing. Now I am having trouble finding it on cruise fish. If I could find something to copy & paste & attach to the early saver form it would help. Just a $10 drop to 369 for 1A, but you know every little bit helps.

    Re: text message price alerts?

I would like to re-surrect this topic again.  In the original reply the cruisefish administrator states: "the SMS 160 character limit is too low to relay the full information..."  I find this to be true.  How about just a simple text which states: "there is an update for your cruisefish alert, please check your email."  I telll you why this is useful.  1) not everybody has a smartphone.  2) those of us who has a smartphone may choose to "Pull" our email rather than having them "Push" to our phone.  This is because most of our personal email also contains a lot of other emails that are not essential.  Have all personal emails 'Push" to a person's phone means that it will use up a lot of data and the phone will constantly buzzing when email comes-in.  More important, to catch a good deal, every second counts.  If I setup an alert for a price update, I would like to react to that update right-away.  With a text message telling me that I should check my email, allows me to go immediately to my email and view the full text; so I can call the cruise company before that price is gone.

The cruisefish administrator also wrote: "sending SMS text messages in bulk is expensive: each mobile operator charges for access to its network."  I really don't know about the cost of bulk SMS; but I do know that a lot of the small to medium size merchants are now texting their customers to alert them on discounts and sales.  For example: my local Chick-Fil-A, Bass Outlet, my local corner cafe...etc.  Perhaps, cost of bulk SMS has come down since 2 years ago.

Finally, I hope the cruisefish team reconsider this request.  A check box can be added to the alert form to say "yes send me a text for this price update."  Users can add his/her cell phone number to the profile.

I am still considering adding SMS/instant message functionality to CF alerts.

Would a WhatsApp message be a good substitue for a SMS? WhatsApp exists on all phone platforms, even on dumbphones.

Anything that pro-actively notifies us on price drop would be a good welcome.  As I stated in my previous posting, Email is a passive form of communication.

I'm going to add on to this thread. I use email gateways to get email alerts to my phone. This worked in the past with AT&T, allowing me to email ##########@txt.att.net.  Unfortunately the verification emails cut off on Verizon, so I cannot add ##########@vtext.com

could i request a feature that allows for the verification email to be shortened under the txt character limit?  After verifying All I would like to see is an sms popup that a change has occurred. I don't need details.

I know this is an old thread but i also think this would be a great feature. Or a mobile app that pushes notifications.

i found out that my email provider allows me to set up forwarding rules.  so I added one for all email from alert@cruisefish.net to forward to my phone number @vtext .  seems to be working

My problem with this is that there is I get a lot of noise from Cruisefish. I have it sending me alerts when categories get added or deleted, and when prices increase (I know I can reduce these but I like to see them).  I really only want a text message when there is a significant price drop ("significant" can be user defined). Also, it seems like the content of the price change emails would require several texts.

I missed a huge price drop on 9/1 because I was on a cruise and did not read the email that had arrived at 4am until much later that day, at which point they had fixed the price. Fortunately, it came back today, even cheaper tha before, and I saw the email before the price was fixed so I didn't end up missing out this time, but it would have been nice to get a succinct text message when there was a big price drop.

Use If This then That to set up an alert.

I checked that out, and it looks interesting, but it still seems like it's going to be an all or none sort of thing. I could set itup to notify me when I received an email from Cruisefish, but not based on the content.

Part of this problem is caused by CF not sending a unique  subject line saying what the change is. I guess this makes sense since any number of alerts may be in the same email. But it doesn't help situations like this.
