    Odd Cycling of prices daily

In Carnival cruises I am monitoring there is an odd cycling of prices daily in multiple categories. Here are two examples: http://www.cruisefish.net/selector.md?id_cruise=16934 http://www.cruisefish.net/selector.md?id_cruise=16935

Look at the FunSelect Column and you see categories that have been going up and down daily for 3 days. These kick off "UP" and "DOWN" notifications. Yet, the Carnival website shows the lower price consistently. Is this a function of the "Free Category Upgrade" pricing on the Carnival site (8F for the price of an 8D) or something else?

Now that I see what's happening it's easy enough to just double check against the Carnival site, but it was a shock the first time I saw an "UP" message for a cruise that had been trending down and still has plenty of availability!

Actually what may be happening is that we treat most Carnival "Sale" rates (Europe Sale, etc.) as Fun Select when they appear. As these rates are too numerous to list on our prices tables it seemed like a good idea to integrate them with the main rate with which they are most similar.

Maybe these special "Sale" events have been going on and off for your cruises in the last few days.

In any case if you don't want to be bothered by that price flipping just subscribe to the DOWN event: that way you only get an alert when the is goes lower than your last alert.

Thanks Titus. Now that I know how you handle the oddball "sale" rates I can see where the up & down changes are coming from, and in this case its a Europe sales rate. That rate has not been appearing and disappearing on the Carnival site, its been constant. Probably what's happening is a timing issue when CF retreives the Fun Select rate and the Europe sale rate during a sweep. Whichever one is retreived last must be the one that gets posted.

I've done what you suggested and unsubscribed to the UP event, even though I would prefer to be notified of real UP events.

I LOVE CF. You've done an amazing job both in gathering and especially in coherently displaying a hugely complex matrix of data. And thanks also for explaining the seeming anomolies that crop up from time to time. Understanding the process is key to interpreting the results and finding work-arounds. In that spirit, I'll offer a suggestion for consideration:

For me (and may not be what a majority of users would want) I would prefer you either ignore special rates and say upfront you only will have rate columns for the Standard rate (for Carnival, that's Fun Select), Carnival's Early Saver rate, Senior rate, Past Guest rate, Military rate, and Residency rate. -OR- add a column called "Other" or "Special" or "Promo", and lump anything except the above rate classes in there.

Thanks for the nice comments, they really motivate us to keep making CF a better tool.

I'm not sure what happened on your cruises with that price flipping but I'll put in more traces in our code to be able to find out next time.

And I like your suggestion of a "Special" column to put oddball rates when/if they appear. I'll definitely consider it.

Re: Odd Cycling of prices daily

Please take another look at this.

Here's a cruise that illustrates the problem: http://www.cruisefish.net/selector.md?id_cruise=16934

The Fun Select rate currently shown on CF for categoy 8F, $1,989, is incorrect. The correct Fun Select rate for categoy 8F is $1,899.

The $1,989 rate is a Europe Sale rate (which carries with it some O.B.C., but that is not germaine here).

On the Selector screen, if you hover over that cell for historical prices all 10 spaces are taken up with flips between $1,899 and $1,989 within the past week. In fact, neither the Fun Select rate nor the Europe Sale rate has changed at all for quite some time and certainly not in the last week.

I am following category 8F, but all the red colored Fun Select prices follow the same pattern, and are all currently showing an incorrect Fun Select price.

A "Specials" column would sure make a big difference.

    Thanks

    Hi,

Still looking at this? It's still happening on this sailing and others:

    http://www.cruisefish.net/selector.md?id_cruise=16934

As of 3:30 PM 3/3/12 the Fun Saver rtes have flipped to the wrong price again. Happens every day or so.

You mean Fun Select or Early Saver?

I've been pretty busy lately with setting up full price history. By the way you can try it out by clicking on any price.

Doing your "Other" rate idea is still in my todo list, don't worry.

I meant Fun Select, sorry. Happy to know you're still persuing it.

The full price history is BRILLIANT. I dont see any points plotted on the graph on the few I tried though. Must be something you're still working on? Great work!
